Tourism in urban revitalization areas : impact on the quality of life of the elderly residents in Hong Kongen_US
Urban ageing and revitalization are inevitable trends in many mature destinations like Hong Kong. While the city is being developed, most elders’ needs may be overlooked, and the tourism impacts on their quality of life may be either under or over-estimated. Although there has been great literature on tourism impacts on resident life satisfaction and quality of life, elderly residents’ perceptions are limited. This study uses Hong Kong as a case study to explore how and why tourism in revitalized urban areas influences the quality of life of elderly residents. Thirty semi-structured in-depth interviews are conducted to understand the elderly residents’ views in four old districts in Hong Kong, namely Central and Western, Wan Chai, Yau Tsim Mong, and Sham Shui Po districts. The findings of this study contribute to the existing tourism literature by enriching insights into elderly residents’ perceptions of tourism impact on their QOL. Also, the results of this study are practical for policymakers' and practitioners’ consideration in tourism planning and enhancing elders’ QOL.en_US
