Abstract: In recent decades, business models have already changed due to globalization and the striving of market players towards continuous competitiveness in various aspects. This phenomenon has changed the buyer-supplier relationships significantly in different sectors. The pressure from increasing costs, the competitors from different economic regions, the remodelling of institutional contexts, and the reduction in the workforce supply have brought more and more difficulties but fewer profits to companies.
Companies must seek improvements or transformations to deal with the challenging conditions and ensure the sustainability of organizational performance. Extensive works of literature have proved that knowledge management is one of the critical success factors for organizations. However, knowledge management is a broad topic and can be achieved differently.
In the 21st century, as interconnectivity and intelligent automation keep growing, industries, societal patterns, processes, and technologies are changing fast. The fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, well conceptualized these changes. Hoping to transform to be more digitalized and thus survive in the market, many companies would like to engage in Industry 4.0 in different extents and ways.
This dissertation addresses how organizations can improve knowledge management competence by adopting the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the critical components of Industry 4.0, to improve their efficiency and, thus, competitiveness.
On the basis of an extensive literature review, four initial constructs containing 15 measurement indicators of KM that will be improved when adopting IoT systems and five initial constructs with 60 measurement indicators of organizational performance measures were identified. A survey questionnaire was designed for data collection and were sent to 130 selected customers of the Pod Group to collect data and 108 valid responses were received and analyzed by exploratory factor analysis to find the potential constructs and multiple regression analysis to find their relationships.
Four KM that will be improved by asopting IoT systems, namely Knowledge Generation, Knowledge Sharing, Knowldege Storage and Documentation and Knwoledge Management Culture were identified. The four KM are statistically associated with the five organizational performance measures at different levels of significance. Knowledge Sharing and Knowledge Management Culture are the critical two as it is significantly associated with three out of the five organizational performance measures.
This dissertation reflects on the situation of organizations in APAC and how they can be improved by taking the result of this dissertation as a reference. This dissertation can also be used for future studies focusing on areas of Industry 4.0 other than IoT and for future study in regions other than APAC.
