dcterms.abstract | This dissertation identifies the key role of fiber-optic sensing technology in structural health monitoring. The degree of strain that occurs in the structure of a floating platform is enough to be fed back in real time from images generated by fiber-optic sensors, which can be converted into a real-time safety assessment of the structural integrity and durability of the structure using a numerical modelling approach. This technology provides early warning of safety issues, informs the construction and maintenance of floating platforms, and ensures that platforms are able to continue to operate efficiently and effectively over long periods of time in harsh marine environments. In this dissertation, a numerical model is designed to analyze the data collected by a fiber-optic sensor system. The model can determine the reliability of a specific location and thus estimate the probability of a structural safety problem occurring. The experiment simplifies the floating platform into a planar model in which the fiber-optic sensors are arranged, and their strain images are recorded. The results were compared to the images using finite element analysis to determine the feasibility of the designed solution. By pairing the design and analysis of this simplified model with a rational approach to the entire floating structure, real-time monitoring and data feedback on the safety of the floating structure can be achieved. | en_US |
