Abstract: | In recent years, as global warming has become more and more serious, carbon emissions are considered to be the main cause of global climate change. Carbon emissions in the construction field accounts for a large part, among which embodied carbon emissions of buildings cannot be ignored. Although many studies have been conducted on the monitoring of the buildings’ embodied carbon emissions, there are still limitations with a lack of real-time data and transparency, fragmented and isolated data systems as well as inconsistent measurement and reporting standards. Therefore, this study aims to develop a real-time carbon emissions monitoring system in the construction process of prefabricated buildings. The system consists of three important parts: (1) Firstly, through the Internet of Things technology, the system can automatically monitor and collect data from equipment such as factory processing machines, transport vehicles and on-site installation equipment etc. (2) Secondly, through the blockchain technology, the collected data can be flowable and stored more securely and credibly in the system.(3)Thirdly, the system has a visualization platform to calculate the embodied carbon emissions from the collected data, and the calculation results can be displayed on the web interfaces, from which stakeholders can see the carbon emissions in real time and compare them to the expected plan, making timely adjustments. The study developed an advanced multi-technology carbon emissions monitoring system and the system will be applied to the Kowloon Tong student hostel being constructed by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to test its effectiveness. This system provides a valuable implication and practical demonstration for the monitoring of building carbon emissions. |
