Abstract: | Teaching effectiveness (TE) and learning outcomes center on teacher-learner rapport. Therefore, teachers’ social intelligence (SI) is key in teaching English as English is affectively used and communicatively acquired. However, little has focused on teachers’ intrapersonal prominent mediator which mediates teachers’ interactive decision-making to maintain rapport, and how best this mediator promotes sustainable quality teaching. In what follows, this study reviews the literature on TE in its relations to SI in education research and educational psychology and argues for the significance of these constructs specifically within English as a second language (ESL). Next, the study reports findings of a mixed-methods empirical study on TE and SI of 85 in-service teachers in Hong Kong adult ESL followed by the prominent intrapersonal mediator after detailed evaluations of 8 of these teachers on TE through lesson observations using the dynamic model, and their beliefs and practices through semi-structure interviews and stimulated recalls. Results suggest the medium level of TE in this context is supported by quality rapport being at the heart of interactive decision-making which is ultimately governed by teachers’ self-efficacy. Finally, the conclusion on self-care and self-development for ESL teachers is drawn by reflecting on the implications of the findings. |
