An exploratory study of the critical success factors of quality management of privately-owned elderly residential care home providers in Hong Kongen_US
This study represents an exploratory and pioneering effort to identify and develop critical success factors of quality management applicable to privately-owned elderly residential care home providers in Hong Kong and their implications on quality performance.en_US
Amidst an ageing population, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government is actively addressing the issue by increasing the provision of elderly residential care home places in both public and private sectors of the elderly care industry through comprehensive policies and initiatives. This context presents unprecedented business opportunities to the private sector, which holds the largest market share, up to 69%. To excel in the industry, privately-owned elderly residential care home providers must deliver quality services that meet the expectations of individual customers and comply with government standards for service quality. Excellent quality management and corresponding quality performances enable firms to maintain their competitiveness, seize business opportunities, and contribute to society.en_US
The study has three research objectives: (1) explore and identify potential critical success factors of quality management applicable to privately-owned elderly residential care home providers in Hong Kong, (2) identify and develop quality management measures pertinent to these providers, and (3) examine and predict the relationships between the identified potential critical success factors and quality management measures in privately-owned elderly residential care home providers in Hong Kong.en_US
A cross-sectional study design was implemented at the organisational level, involving the collection of 140 valid questionnaires from senior management teams of privately-owned elderly residential care home providers licensed by the Social Welfare Department in Hong Kong as of May 2022. The response rate was approximately 23%. The study incorporated an extensive literature review, encompassing academic and practical perspectives, focusing on critical success factors of quality management and quality performance measures specific to the elderly care service industry. Key statistical analyses were performed, such as exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Additionally, a case study of Culture Homes Four, a prominent privately-owned elderly residential care home provider under the CTL Group in Hong Kong, was conducted to validate the statistical findings in a practical context in 2022.en_US
The study identified three critical success factors for quality management of privately-owned elderly residential care home providers: firm social responsibility, human capital management, and innovation and technology development. These factors demonstrated significant and positive associations with quality performance measures, including firm social responsibility performance, consumer satisfaction, and health and well-being performance, at varying significance levels. Human capital management emerged as the most prominent critical success factor, showing significant and positive associations with all three identified quality performance indicators.en_US
The findings of this applied study provide theoretical implications for academic researchers and practical implications for industry practitioners and policymakers. They also provide valuable insights and references for enhancing quality management practices and quality performance measures in elderly residential care homes in Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Areas, and other regions in the long term.en_US
