Abstract: There is emerging evidence supporting virtual reality (VR) exercises for managing diabetes. However, the protocols of exercise programmes including frequency and duration varied from one study to another study. There have been a limited number of randomised controlled trials conducted in diabetic research.
This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of interactive immersive VR exercise in older adults with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). In a 12-week randomised controlled trial with 29 participants, the VR group, receiving tailored VR-based exercises, demonstrated higher compliance than the control group.
While no significant improvements were observed in blood glucose (HbA1c), health-related quality of life (SF-36), or diabetes-related distress (CDDS-17), the VR group showed enhanced cognitive function compared to the control group, as indicated by CANTAB scores. Notably, The Paired Associates Learning First Attempts Memory Score (PALFAMS) and the Reaction Time Mean Five-Choice Movement Time (RTIFMMT) showed significant interaction effects. While the study suggested higher exercise compliance with VR-based exercise and improved cognitive function, it acknowledged the need for larger-scale randomised controlled trials is highly recommended. Additionally, it recommended exploring more vigorous exercise protocols for potential improvements in future studies.
