Abstract: | Over the years, the earth and its natural resources and living space have been tremendously and continuously exploited in the fastest pace to satisfy people's ever-increasing needs for spacious and quality life, resulting in global warming, energy consumption, environmental contamination, emission pollution, etc., which are detrimentally affecting the natural environment and human health, such as the ozone hole above the Antarctica was enlarged to approximately 10 million square miles on 16 September 2023, which is almost three times of the inland area of China. It is also estimated that approximately 3.2 million and 6.7 million premature deaths were caused by various kinds of fatal diseases and illnesses relating to indoor air quality and ambient and indoor air pollution, respectively. The emerging prefabricated construction technology has not been in a position to fully address all environmental issues of interior decoration and renovation that are closely related and detrimental to human lives and health based on the premise that people spend up to 90% of their time indoors. On this basis, the first and foremost step to overcome these challenges is to ensure and improve the quality of life through inspiring studies and practices to explore and promote greener and healthier living spaces to assure and strengthen indoor air quality standards in the interior design materials industry, including prefabricated interior design materials. It goes further that the urged research on critical success factors and their organizational performance implications shall motivate and stimulate prefabricated interior design materials providers in the environmental transformation era is immense and crucial nowadays in view of the fact that their business growth and survival shall better ensure and guarantee the prefabricated interior design materials industry to be sustained and expanded to improve indoor air quality for exceling human lives and health. This exploratory study aims to identify the critical success factors of prefabricated interior design materials providers in the environmental transformation era and their organizational performance implications. A cross-sectional field study at organizational-level was conducted to collect empirical data from 140 prefabricated interior design materials providers in Hong Kong through a reliable, empirically tested, and rigorously validated survey instrument. The study identified six critical success factors covering (1) Leadership and Strategic Management, (2) Quality Management, (3) Operations Management, (4) Technology and Innovation, (5) Marketing and Promotion Strategy, and (6) Environmental and Social Responsibility, which are significantly and positively related to and associated with four organizational performance measures comprising (1) Financial Performance, (2) Marketing Performance, (3) Operational Performance, (4) Environmental and Social Performance. Among them, Leadership and Strategic Management is found to be the most prominent critical success factors of prefabricated interior design materials providers in the environmental transformation era based on the premise that Leadership and Strategic Management is the only critical success factor that is significantly and positively related to and associated with all four organizational performance measures. This study imparts theoretical and managerial implications concerning the critical success factors and organizational performance measures of prefabricated interior design materials providers, particularly in the environmental transformation era. From academic perspective, this study enriches previous studies centering at critical success factors, organizational performance measures, and their relationships, particularly this study focuses on prefabricated interior design materials providers in the environmental transformation. In addition, this study, conducted a holistic review and analysis covering a comprehensive set of critical success factors and organizational performance measures for prefabricated interior design materials providers in the environmental transformation era. This study shall arouse further research interests in various manners, such as the adoption of the critical success factors and organizational performance measures identified by this study to focus on other business sectors, industries, geographic locations, and emerging phenomena, as well as consider any possible moderating and mediating variables to examine the relationships between critical success factors and organizational performance.
