dc.title | Explicit knowledge creation and dissemination in the Saudi hotel sector : insights from senior hotel managers | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The study aimed to explore how the hotels in Saudi Arabia interact with the hospitality and tourism authority of the country's Ministry of Tourism (MoT) concerning explicit knowledge creation. The main research problem that intensified the need to choose this research area is the shortage of academic and professional research initiatives concerning how knowledge is created and disseminated in the hotel industry in Saudi Arabia. The study adopted an interpretivism research philosophy and an inductive research approach due to the study's explorative nature. A qualitative research method was chosen to collect data from 24 senior hotel managers who are working in 12 hotels in Saudi Arabia. Since they are responsible for overseeing the process of knowledge creation, auditing and dissemination prior to the MoT, it is imperative that they review their perspective of the explicit knowledge creation process. Due to the high level of engagement and their ability to foster any exchange, their inputs are highly valuable. The convenient sampling method was chosen to ensure that the participants have sufficient expertise to address research questions. Hotels in Saudi Arabia have some stringent criteria, such as auditing, verification, accuracy, and standards, to create explicit knowledge. Information about guests’ complaints and the nationality of the guests are some core areas in which the hotels develop explicit knowledge. The study noted some critical issues in the KM approach, such as limited communication. Website portals and emails are mainly used for communication between the hotels and the MoT. Hotels use a centralized approach to knowledge auditing and dissemination, except for a few hotels using a decentralized approach. The study noted that hotels in the Kingdom use a one-way communication approach, and a few key roles are eligible to disseminate information to the MoT. The study introduced some pioneering theoretical implications, such as the versatile nature of explicit knowledge creation, decentralized knowledge auditing as a framework for dynamic knowledge management, strategic communication as a catalyst for knowledge creation, etc. It was recommended that hotels implement two-way communication systems, have dedicated cross-functional teams for knowledge dissemination, and have an agile and interconnected connectivity portal. The study encountered a few limitations concerning internal and external validation issues, limited data range, and issues with information validation. | en_US |
