dcterms.abstractThis thesis investigates the potential of generative artificial intelligence (Gen-AI) as a substitute for informal digital learning of English. Specifically, it focuses on the perceived quality (PQ) and perceived functional value (PFV) of the Gen-AI tools for language learning. International Posture (IP) and Ideal Second Language Self (Ideal L2-Self) are two important motivational factors for learners acquiring a second language. The theoretical framework draws upon concepts from the Theory of Second Language Motivational Self System. To test the hypotheses, a quantitative cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted, gathering data from 246 second language learners with majority of participants aged between 18 to 24 from senior high school and vocational school. The findings of this study contribute to our understanding of how learners, when they perceive higher quality and functional value of Gen-AI tools for language learning, tend to integrate these tools into their language learning practices.en_US
