dcterms.abstractCommunicative Language Teaching, (CLT), to its advocates, represents a new and revolutionary approach to the teaching-learning process, in helping learners with the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively in real-life contexts. The basic assumptions it makes about the 'what' and 'how' of teaching and learning certainly attract the contemporary mind. But, reservations are often made about the appropriacy and feasibility of putting CLT into practice, in various pedagogical setting, and for different types of learners. This paper aims at exploring the learners' beliefs, attitudes and expectation of language learning, with particular reference to the communicative approach. Following an overview of the linguistic background to and the development and defining characteristics of CLT, there is a brief section on its relevance in the Hong Kong context. Next, the paper reports on and examine data from a questionnaire study administered to a group of 189 first year degree students of Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The data provides an overall picture of the students' attitudes of teaching and learning, favoured classroom activities, teacher/learner role relationships, and expectations. The paper indicates the significance of such findings for the communicative teacher, in raising their awareness of their learners' needs and aspirations, to help promote effective teaching and learning.en_US
