| dcterms.abstract | This paper explores the lived experience of frontline ICU nurses in caring SARS patients during the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong. It was an exploratory qualitative research of 10 frontline ICU nurses through semi-structured interviews. The participants were asked on their lived experienced in caring SARS patients, their coping strategies, and concerns in the future. Totally, 10 main themes emerged from the data. They were: fears, stress, isolation and stigmatization, physical impacts, coping strategies, changes on nursing practice, new views on nursing profession, preparation for future outbreak, future plan, and expectation. The findings show that frontline ICU nurses suffered a great deal of fears and stress in caring the SARS patients. The feelings of social isolation and stigmatization from the community also deeply affected the nurses' daily life. Nevertheless, Hong Kong nurses coped well in the SAR period, learned much from the experience, and well prepared for another outbreak. The participants also showed deep concern on their future. The findings suggest the staff at the managerial level should listen more to the concerns from frontline health care workers and give supports to them. | en_US |
