An understanding on the struggle for autonomy in heterosexual relationship of deviant girlsen_US
The aim of this study is to explore the process of struggle for autonomy of deviant girls in their heterosexual relationship and to identify the influences of their gender role perception on their struggles. This study employs a qualitative methodology with in-depth interview to encourage participants' expression of their personal experience. Seven girls who exhibit deviant behaviors and have stable heterosexual relationship participated in this study. The findings of this study provide us with a deeper understanding on the complicated process of seeking autonomy of deviant girls. They seemed to have two types of reactions towards the controlling behaviors and attitudes of their significance others. They rebel against parents and teachers but they comply with the restriction by their boyfriends. The underlining meaning of their rebellion is not looking for separation from others but is seeking for love. Their striving for autonomy is fighting for the freedom to choose their love relationship. Moreover, girls suffer the infringement on their autonomy and tolerate the controlling heterosexual relationship. They are bounded by their gender role perception and view the controls of their boyfriends on their life are reasonable and acceptable. Although this study is small scale, the finding is insightful and it brings some implications for social worker in working with these girls. Social worker should help the girls to understand how they are bounded by their gender role and encourage their self-development instead of being suppressed in an unequal love relationship.en_US
