dc.title | An exploratory study of quality of life of residents in a half-way housein Hong Kong | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | This is an exploratory research study of quality of life of residents in a half-way house in Hong Kong. A sample of eight half-way house residents staying in Choi Wan Hostel for more than one year were interviewed. The method of direct qualitative in-depth interview is used to explore quality of life of residents in the half-way house in the five components, namely, Community, Relationship, Choice, Competence and Respect. According to Murphy (1992), those five components are the essential dimensions of quality of life of the discharged mental patients living in the half-way houses. In the present study, from the perception of quality of life of respondents, the data showed that respondents are satisfied with their status quo and perceive their quality of life as good. Firstly, they are satisfied with availability and accessibility of community resources and facilities nearby the half-way house. Secondly, they are satisfied with the current friendship among residents and volunteers as well as the respectful residents-staff relationship. Thirdly, they are satisfied with the provision of autonomous decision making power to manage their daily activities. Respondents are also satisfied with aspects of Choice, Competence and Respect. They felt that overall speaking their quality of life in the half-way house are satisfactory. In the course of in-depth interviews, respondents also gave feedback and suggestions for improvement of the program activities and service provision of the half-way house so as to enhance their quality of life in the house. The degree of participation and involvement of residents in their community and hostel lives and the efforts of hostel staff in providing a liberal management and an effective program activity can enhance psychological and social well being of residents in the half-way house. The study has implications for the provision of community care service and adequate half-way house service provision and program activities to the residents. Suggestions are made to further enhance quality of life of residents in the half-way house: Firstly, staff of the house should mobilize residents to participate in community and hostel activities frequently. Secondly, staff of the house should encourage residents to strengthen a supportive relationship among residents and the local community members. Thirdly, staff of the house should allow a greater extent of autonomous decision making power to residents in managing their own affairs. Finally, the Government should provide an adequate manpower and financial support for the improvement of the psychiatric rehabilitation service in Hong Kong. | en_US |
