Abstract: Information is an important asset of a company. However it is difficult and time-consuming to get the required information using the current information management methods. This dissertation tries to investigate the application of intranet to information management in my present organisation, the Hong Kong Institute of Education. Intranets, the internal or corporate internets, are likely to be the key information technology revolution for the next decade. The intranet concept is derived from the present World Wide Web model and its technologies. This dissertation gives the rationales for setting up corporate intranets and the popularity of intranets. The key distinctive functional features and applications of intranets are discussed. The majority of respondents replied to the questionnaire survey perceived that Intranet Approach was better than traditional information management system in updating information, acting as an unique and updated source of information, providing multimedia capabilities, the supply of add-on applications and enabling collaborative work. 'The time required to get updated information', 'Running cost' and 'Ease of use' were considered as the most important factors affecting the time, cost and general performance of information management systems respectively. This dissertation ends up outlining an intranet model for the Hong Kong Institute of Education.
