Abstract: | The rapid ageing of China's population presents significant social and economic challenges, necessitating strategies to enhance the well-being of older adults. In Hefei, a city rich in history and cultural heritage, the role of grandparents is deeply embedded in societal values, providing a unique context to explore the social dynamics of ageing. This study examines the impact of grandparents' social identity and loneliness, considering how public facilities can alleviate grandparents' loneliness. It addresses the often-overlooked influence of specific types of facilities and cultural contexts in existing research. This study conducted questionnaire interviews with 143 participants from four areas in Hefei with a high proportion of elderly residents. First, a preliminary regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between grandparent identity recognition and elderly loneliness. The results showed that higher grandparent identity recognition was associated with a reduction in feelings of loneliness. Pearson correlation analysis was then used to identify which grandparent identity characteristics were significantly correlated with loneliness. Next, the relationship between public facilities and grandparent identity was explored. This helped to determine whether public facilities were significantly associated with social inclusion, identity, and loneliness in the grandparent group. Positive recognition of grandparents' identity is usually associated with lower levels of loneliness and can enhance their social connections, emotional support, and sense of belonging through participation in public facility activities. |
