An autoethnography of a bereaved parent with infant loss in Hong Kong : implication for social work practiceen_US
The experience of infant loss is often extraordinarily devastating and traumatic for the parents. There is a need for compassionate professional care and support from the hospital system and healthcare providers during this time. Hospitals and healthcare providers need to consider the unique perspectives of parents facing the death of their infant and understand the particular challenges and experiences involved in parental bereavement to provide the most appropriate and sensitive hospital care services, such as perinatal palliative, bereavement, and end-of-life care services. This research study includes a qualitative research design with a narrative approach involving an in-depth autoethnography of the experience of a bereaved mother through infant loss. The purpose of this study is to develop a greater understanding of the experiences of bereaved parents of infant loss, to look into parents' survival responses and the services and supports received, to discover what a parent found helpful and harmful, and to suggest how hospital caregivers and staff can improve care for this population during this intense and traumatic time. Data interpretation and data analysis include systematic reflexive introspection and thematic analysis. Topical categories of concern and improvements in practice infrastructure and standardized care, medical relationships, and bereavement interventions were identified in the study findings. Six dominant perceptions from the parent perspective highlighted the needs of bereaved parents undergoing infant loss. The insights describing the meaning of the lived experience would hopefully assist other bereaved parents of infant loss and medical practitioners in providing more appropriate, culturally competent, supportive, and broader hospital care and policy, and inform social work research, education, and practice. The hope of this study is also to raise awareness of the experiences and challenges that come from these parents - to give voice, perspective, and representation to the underrepresented and understudied groups of bereaved parents of infant loss and to create space for further dialogue for those that will and have gone through such a journey, the parents and caregivers, practitioners, and policymakers.en_US
