Abstract: | This thesis has three goals: first, to investigate how CEO celebrity affects the firm's competitive actions; second, to determine the average age of top management team (TMT) members and the percentage of female TMT members which act as mediators; and third, to examine how corporate governance can help mitigate the relationship between CEO celebrity and firm competitive actions. Additionally, it will explore whether corporate governance moderates the connection between CEO celebrity and TMT heterogeneity. Both of these goals are interconnected and interrelated. From 2009 to 2019, the companies in my dataset are publicly traded and included in the Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500) in the United States of America (USA). Real estate firms, banks, insurance providers, and financial institutions are excluded due to the regulatory requirements for each type of business vary. According to my research findings, celebrity CEOs positively influence a company's competitive actions. In terms of how a CEO's fame connects to the company's competitive behaviors, the age and gender of TMT employees act as mediators in this relationship. Additionally, strong corporate governance can enhance the significant effect that a CEO's celebrity presence has on the company's competitive strategies. The connection between CEO celebrity and TMT heterogeneity is also affected by corporate governance, which moderates this relationship. Specifically, this dissertation contributes to the strategic discussion on management and human resources. The findings are important because they emphasize the significance of TMT composition and offer organizations valuable insights on recruiting and managing celebrity CEOs to foster good governance. |
