Abstract: The swift advancement of the digital economy is underpinned by an array of pivotal technologies, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things. Nonetheless, if these digital technologies are not leveraged efficaciously, their potential to propel the digital economy forward could be marred by adverse consequences. As digital technologies continue their inexorable march of progress, scholarly investigation into the value of digital transformation has broadened to encompass a wider economic context, accounting for a broader spectrum of interconnected effects.
In the academic sphere, consensus regarding the correlation between digital transformation and enterprise performance remains elusive. One vantage point posits that digital transformation can engender digital dividends and enhance enterprise performance, whereas another contends that it could exacerbate the digital divide and impede enterprise performance. The intricate and intertwined relationship between digital transformation and enterprise performance has become an issue of pressing urgency that necessitates immediate attention. Delving into the underlying mechanisms that drive the effects of digital transformation on enterprise performance is crucial, as it sheds light on the processes through which these effects manifest.
Moreover, it is essential to ascertain whether the impact of digital transformation varies across diverse contexts. Variables such as industry dynamics, organizational culture, and regional disparities could influence how businesses navigate the process of digital transformation. Identifying these contextual nuances offers valuable insights that can inform targeted strategies and interventions.
To garner a comprehensive understanding of the impact of digital transformation on enterprise performance, it is imperative to explore several pivotal questions. This paper endeavors to systematically scrutinize the relationship between digital transformation and enterprise performance by addressing three pivotal questions:
1. What influence does digital transformation have on enterprise performance?
2. What are the foundational mechanisms that underpin the effects of digital transformation on enterprise performance?
3. Is there heterogeneity in the impact of digital transformation on enterprise performance across different contexts?
Through rigorous empirical research and analysis of these questions, we aim to provide valuable insights that can guide strategic decision-making and facilitate effective adaptation to the ongoing technological shifts in today's ever-evolving business environment.
