Abstract: In residential buildings of Hong Kong, the investigation of building services embodied energy is relatively significant to optimize power & cost consumption. Electrical, fire & air conditioners services have been analyzed in terms of producing, transporting and processing embodied energy distribution in different life span of a building. The methodology of estimating the quantity and embodied energy of building services materials & elements on two Housing blocks (NCB & Harmony Blocks) are also developed for determining the profile of embodied energy use. Results reveal that PVC conduits installed in electrical services and window air-conditioners provided in flats are the major materials for embodied energy consumption. Besides, the embodied energy of producing is the main component of building services installation, regardless of initial and recurring energy usage. Various comparisons such as cost & quantity of building services embodied energy, building services & building envelope, two typical housing blocks are also presented. Suggestions would be provided for architects, engineers & policy makers of government & property developers about the efficiency & effectiveness of embodied energy savings in recycled material selection and frequent maintenance program.
