| Abstract: | The subsequent analysis investigates the influence of lightning strikes on buildings, emphasizing that these strikes can ruin both the building structure and its internal systems, as well as pose risks to occupants. This study reviews early research on lightning, examining the characteristics of lightning electromagnetic pulses (LEMPs) and fields, along with relevant simulation and measurement techniques. Methodologically, the finite difference time-domain method and XFDTD software are used to create a detailed building model that encompasses the structure, electrical system, and lightning protection devices. The simulation of lightning impacts on the building follows. By comparing the simulation results under three conditions: no lightning protection, with lightning rod and with surge protection device (SPD), it is found that lightning protection measures can effectively reduce the impact of lightning on electrical equipment. Finally, it is concluded that reasonable lightning protection design is essential to protect modern buildings and their internal equipment from lightning damage, and suggestions for lightning protection that should be considered in building design are proposed. |
