| Abstract: | Social media is becoming increasingly popular, with billions of pieces of content posted daily. Social media provides new opportunities to study human behaviour in the digital age. Social platforms' anonymity and instant sharing capabilities cause people to share their genuine thoughts and emotions more willingly on social media. This study focuses on the emotions that the contents of social media carry, which describe outdoor activity experience, and tries to understand how the emotion is affected by the thermal environment they experienced. Around 1000 social media content which described outdoor activities and were published by Hong Kong citizens were collected. The sentiment analysis tool VADER is employed to assess the emotional tenor of social media content and quantify the emotion factor on a scale ranging from -1 to 1. The findings indicate that this study unveils the correlation between the thermal environment and public sentiment, thereby substantiating the pivotal role of social media data in environmental and behavioural research. By identifying the thermal comfort range and the impact of high temperature on mood, this study provides a scientific basis for urban design. |
