dcterms.abstractThe purpose of the research is to explore the effects of various combinations of Just-In-Time (JIT) strategies on the system performance of the production in a jewelry job shop. The strategies included pull production withdrawal type, small lot sizing, setup time reduction, production schedule stabilization and frequency of supply delivery. The data for the analysis is generated by a SIMPROCESS simulation model which is developed according to the existing jewelry job shop operation with various combinations of JIT strategies being experimented. ANOVA tests are employed to analyze the 2*2*2*2*2*2 complete factorial experiment on the model to determine whether these strategies and their interactions significantly affect the performance measures. Since there are multiple dependent variables (15 performance measures), ANOVA tests are extended to multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Multiple ANOVAs, one for each dependent variable, are conducted as follow-up analysis. Tests of between-subjects effects are also performed to study the interaction effects between factors. Further, the relative significance among factors for each performance measure is considered with reference to the Eta-squared values. Experimental results are presented, indicating that each JIT strategy affects the production performance differently. The best performers in order are: the lot size reduction policy, the pull production withdrawal system, the more stable production schedule, the increase in the frequency of diamond supply. Setup time reduction policy is identified as the strategy having no significant impact on any performance measures. The increase in the frequency of gold supply is highly not recommended. Since the effect of lot size reduction is more significant with the push system, the use of lot size reduction should not be accomplished with the implementation of the pull system. Instead the pull system should be implemented in conjunction with the freezing production schedule strategy and the increase in the frequency of diamond supply.en_US
