| Abstract: | This mixed-methods study investigates the relationship between enjoyment, boredom, as well as L2 grit, and Chinese high school L2 learners' writing achievement. 67 Chinese high school students were asked to finish a writing task and fill in the Foreign Language Writing Enjoyment and Boredom Scales and the L2 Grit Scale. 10 students among them were interviewed for their self-perception of L2 grit, writing emotions, and writing achievement. Correlational analyses show that L2 grit, both PE and CI, has small positive correlations with L2 writing enjoyment and achievement and that L2 writing boredom has a medium negative correlation with enjoyment. Combined with qualitative data, the findings showed that students experience L2 writing enjoyment when they perceive more value and control of the tasks such as feeling immersed in the writing context, being allowed to write creatively, getting teachers' feedback, and being confident about accomplishing the tasks. On the other hand, the results suggest that boredom may be induced when the writing prompts are artificial, and students do not how to finish writing tasks. Students demonstrated overall high levels of PE while CI often existed among those with higher levels of L2 writing achievement. Emotions do not contribute to Gaokao L2 writing achievement because what they influence is not as direct and significant as L2 grit in Gaokao L2 writing tasks. A virtuous circle between L2 writing enjoyment and L2 grit is found. Pedagogical implications are generated based on the findings. |
