Abstract: This study examined motivational profiles among Chinese university students majoring in languages other than English (LOTEs) using a sequential mixed-methods design. A total of 298 students from seven LOTEs programs at a single university completed a survey assessing key motivational constructs, and 24 students participated in follow-up interviews.
Latent Profile Analysis identified four distinct motivational profiles: amotivated (12.08%), intrinsically motivated (14.77%), moderate motivation (45.64%), and high quantity motivation (27.52%). These profiles were significantly associated with language proficiency, intended effort, and anxiety. Students with high intrinsic or high quantity motivation showed more favorable learning outcomes than those with moderate or amotivated profiles.
Qualitative data revealed evidence of motivational shifts and diverse adaptation strategies in response to institutional and personal demands. The prevalence of moderate motivation (45.64%) and signs of intra-individual change suggest that learner motivation in formal language learning contexts is more dynamic and heterogeneous than static classification approaches might suggest.
This research highlights the value of person-centered and mixed-methods approaches for capturing nuanced motivational patterns. It also underscores the need for longitudinal investigations to explore the stability and evolution of motivational profiles over time.
