| dcterms.abstract | This study conceptually replicates Sanz’s (2000) study on the impact of bilingualism on third language acquisition to assess whether its findings can be applied to a different population and setting. As a secondary focus, this study aims to explore the relationship between first language literacy and third language learning among bilingual participants. Both the original and the present replication study examined the impact of bilingualism on learning English as a third language. Data from 200 participants at a high school in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture were analyzed using a sequence of regression analyses. The results partially confirmed the findings of the original study. Unlike Sanz’s study, which found that both motivation and exposure significantly predicted English proficiency and that the contribution of bilingualism was separate from that of these two predictors, the current study found that only motivation significantly contributed to higher English achievement and that bilingualism had a positive effect on third language acquisition independent of motivation. | en_US |
