| dcterms.abstract | This mixed-method study targets mainland Chinese (MLC) learners in Hong Kong and aims to explore their willingness to communicate (WTC) in English and the sociolinguistic factors related to it. It employs an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase focused on the relationships between adaption to Hong Kong, contact with locals, WTC outside classroom, and its predictors such as English use confidence, English use anxiety, and perceived English competence. The qualitative phase investigated the influences of experiences in Hong Kong on the WTC outside the classroom and the influencing factors of transient WTC inside the classroom. The characteristics of Hong Kong, such as the multilingual environment, EMI in the classroom, and the prevalent language mixing phenomenon, are considered, and the learners' imagined community, identity construction, and strategic language choice are included in the interview. As the participants reported, the experiences in Hong Kong play an important role in influencing their English learning, and English learning in turn influences the adaption to Hong Kong. | en_US |
