| dcterms.abstract | This dissertation integrates insights from three complementary studies to explore the impacts of announcing and implementing corporate carbon neutrality goal setting and on firms' environmental performance. The first study demonstrates that ambitious carbon neutrality goals can trigger shareholder concerns and reduce firm value, particularly in the absence of effective operational and green capabilities. The second study examines the environmental outcomes of carbon neutrality goal announcements, revealing a reduction in firms' internal carbon emissions (Scopes 1 and 2) but identifying significant carbon leakage in supply chains (Scope 3). However, supply chain integration and sustainable supplier selection mitigate these unintended consequences. The third study investigates the role of customer base complexity (horizontal, vertical, and spatial dimensions) in shaping firms' environmental performance. The findings highlight that customer base complexity exerts negative pressures on environmental outcomes, but these effects can be alleviated through robust environmental management systems. Together, these studies provide a comprehensive understanding of how goal setting, stakeholder concern, and supply chain dynamics influence firms' environmental sustainability efforts. The dissertation offers theoretical insights and actionable guidance for researchers, managers and policymakers aiming to balance stakeholder pressures, improve emissions performance, and achieve sustainable operations. | en_US |
