| Abstract: | The thesis is a report of the research on characteristics of early adopters of wireless data services in China. The research scope of the project is focused on the adopters behaviour of mobile internet with WAP ( Wireless Application Protocol ) as browser and mobile handsets as terminals. The research project examines the influence on the usage of wireless data services by both demographic and psychological fields of adopters. With the method of multivariate analysis (including bivariate regression, multiple regression, logistic regression and multiple discriminant analysis) , the research gives the relationships and correlation coefficients between characteristics of adopters and usage based on the data collected from sampling. The study contains two major parts. The first part is the influence on "use vs.non-use" by characteristics of adopters. The second part is the influence on "how much to use" by characteristics of early adopters. There are some important findings appearing in the research: Demographics of adopters of wireless data services have close relationship with both "use vs. non-use" and "how much to use", but the relationship between demographics and the quantity of usage is not linear. Psychological fields of adopters of wireless data services have close relationship with both "use vs. non-use" and "how much to use", and psychological factors have linear relationship with the quantity of wireless data services usage. There is relationship between demographic and psychological factors of adopters themselves. Income and education of demographic factors and knowledge and attitude of psychological factors have most important influence on the usage of wireless data services. The project presents recommendations to wireless data service operators and content providers based on the research results and new findings to promote the further development of wireless data. The recommendations include using different service modes and providing different contents of wireless data services to the consumers with different demographics, paying more attention to the factors which have most important influence on the usage of wireless data services and attaching importance to the direct influence by psychological fields. |
