dcterms.abstractThe aim of the project is to compare the difference in structural behaviour of simple framed structures using elastic and inelastic analysis under seismic action. In the presence, many design in structures is performed by using elastic analysis approach and followed by using ultimate limited state design of the structural members. For the recent decades, many technical papers in the captioned subject have pointed out that structures under seismic action will undergo plastic deformation. The ductility demand of the structures, which can not be found in elastic design approach, become an important parameter in the design of the structures. For significant seismic action, inelastic analysis approach should be carried out to the structural design. It is uneconomic to design an elastic structure to sustain large seismic action without considering the plastic deformation of the structures. Three cases study will be performed in the following text. Firstly, a four storey framed structure is used to illustrate the inadequacy consideration of deformation resulted from elastic analysis. The deformation beyond calculated by inelastic analysis approach is absorbed by the ductility behaviour of the structures. Secondly, a framed structure with three different height which are four storey, ten storey and twenty storey high respectively, are taken to investigate the elastic and inelastic response of the framed structure under seismic action. Finally, a framed structure with 2 bays, 4 bays and 6 bays will be examined separately to study the influence of the horizontal dimension of structure onto its response under seismic action.en_US
