A study on the relationship between adolescent new immigrants' adjustment in school and self-esteemen_US
This study aimed to examine and understand (1) the relationship between the adolescent new immigrants' adjustment in school and self-esteem, (2) the adolescent new immigrants' adjustment in school in two aspects, i.e. their adaptation to learning and peer relationships in secondary school in Hong Kong, and (3) their needs and utilization of social services. Ninety-two students studying in F.1 to F.2 and F.4 to F.5 had participated in this quantitative study. Findings in the study showed that the respondents' self-esteem was related to the peer relationship and adaptation to learning in school with statistical significance. The findings showed that higher self-esteem was related to better peer relationship. Furthermore, the findings also reflected that higher self-esteem was related to higher rank in class, less difficulty in subject content and more ready to ask questions in class. Furthermore, it was found that higher rank in class was related to better peer relationships. It is worthnoting that the findings on the respondents' self-esteem and peer relationship were quite positive. About 78.3% of the respondents' self-esteem ranged from middle to high self-esteem. Moreover, 82.6% of the respondents' peer relationship scores reflected middle to good peer relationships in school. Considering their rank in class, nearly 40% of them ranked 1-10 in class. Regarding their utilization of adjustment programmes for the new immigrant students and school social work service, about 40% of them did not join the adjustment programmes or utilize school social work service before. It was found that more than half of them did not know about the availability of the adjustment programmes and about 30% of them did not know the availability of the school social work service.en_US
