An investigation of WWW and database integration architecturesen_US
With the excellent characteristics of World Wide Web (WWW) in service capability and database management facility of database system, the integration of these two technologies is now playing an essential role in delivering information related to the large-scale applications, especially in the area of e-commerce. Lots of integration solutions have been developed in the past few years. However, few metrics and standards are developed for the comparison of different WWW database integration solutions. The primary aim of this dissertation is to establish a comparison framework from which people can justify what integration architecture can best fit their needs. This work is also essential to those developers who need to build the foundation of their e-commerce applications, which are related to a promising model for running business activities in future. In this dissertation, we firstly classify the existing integration solutions into two main categories of sewer-side and client-side architectures. Secondly, we identify both quantitative and qualitative criteria as the elements for building the framework. For the quantitative variables, an experimental prototype has been developed to demonstrate which integration solution is better than the others. On the other hand, a grade will be assigned to each qualitative variable when we perform the analytical work on the underlying features among different architectures. Based on the findings and analysis results, a comparison framework is constructed. In addition, we attempt to conclude the commonalities and differences between the server-side and client-side of integration architectures. Finally, we review and discuss some new technologies which can be incorporated in the future development of WWW database integration architectures.en_US
