dcterms.abstractIn Hong Kong, the refuse collection operation in the New Territories is carried out by the Regional Service Council. This is a study aiming at providing a practical route plan for the vehicles to carry out such operation efficiently. Refuse is collected at each Refuse Collection Point (RCP) at least once per day by vehicles which may vary in capacity. Vehicles start from the depot each day, and return back to the depot after tipping all the collected refuse (at a certain tipping site) at the end of the day. Vehicles may visit the tipping site at any time when they are full. Therefore there are capacity as well as time constraints involved in this operation. A software is developed for this route planning. A new concept of Vehicle Traffic Flux (VTF) is introduced which can help the vehicle to pick up the RCP before its neighbours are all picked up and left it "alone". The software is tested with a set of data of 4 vehicles and 63 RCPs. It can provide an initial solution in about 10 seconds. The route can be displayed in a graphic mode or table format. User can also improve the route through a user intervention subroutine. The program will be modified later to include a random walk algorithm which can improve the initial route automatically. Then the whole software will be passed to North District Regional Service Council to help them to plan the refuse collection route.en_US
