Abstract: In recent years, the storage, retrieval and modification of image, video, sound and graphics are made possible by the advance in multimedia technology. It is believed that this technology can be used to develop a multimedia information system for different engineering disciplines to work together under an integrated environment. Conventional development methodology cannot support semantic concepts, like generalization and aggregation relationships. It also does not support non-alphanumeric data type, such as multimedia data. On the other hand, object-oriented (OO) methodology provides a sound platform for developing new emerging applications that require different database support. This methodology can also produce software with high reusability and stability. It provides a consistent underlying representation for analysis, design and implementation. The purpose of this dissertation is to use the OO approach to develop an integrated Housing Information System (HIS) to support the different disciplines to monitor their projects in the Housing Department. To validate the effectiveness of the design, a prototype was implemented based on the principles of OO methodology. It should support conventional data as well as multimedia data. It is believed that the methodology employed in the development of the prototype is also applicable in general to other large scale housing industries.
