| dcterms.abstract | Purpose: To explore the perceived life satisfaction and the factors affecting life satisfaction among clients with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) living in the community. It is envisaged that the findings of this study can help identify the nursing care needs of SCI clients for enhancing community adaptation and improving quality of life. This evidence-based information is important for providing direction for developing future community-based rehabilitation nursing intervention for clients with SCI. Method: People with SCI who met the selection criteria were recruited to the study. Written informed consent was obtained before the data collection. The data was collected by telephone interview. This was a cross sectional study with two components: self-reported questionnaires and open-ended questions. The questionnaire component was used to explore the subjects' sociodemographic profile, clinical profile, the ability of self-care, social support and the life satisfaction. Open-ended questions were used for the subjects to elaborate or supplement aspects of living with SCI and their satisfaction with the current situation. Results: the findings indicated that pain, activities of daily living, and sphincter control were the factors affecting life satisfaction among the people with SCI. In addition, the perceived informational support was most insufficient when compared with the emotional support, the tangible support, and the social companionship. The people with SCI expected to improve their opportunities for both taking part in leisure activities and in their abilities to resume pre-morbid activities. It would be challenging work for rehabilitation nurses to help the people with SCI reach their expectations in the initial phase of rehabilitation and community integration on hospital discharge. | en_US |
