System integration strategy for business acquisition : a case study of horizontal type of acquisitionen_US
Under the increasingly competitive business environment, merger and acquisition activity represents a 'fast track' for contestants rather than internal growth alone. It is conjectured that one of the most difficult components to deal with in the post-acquisitive integrative phase has been the definition of the new corporate IS infrastructure requirements and the incumbent integration and development of the inherited IS/IT structures. Despite the importance of information technology to organizations, there is evidence that they often do not give adequate consideration to IT when undergoing merger or acquisition. The purpose of this research is to review experiences of management of IS/IT strategies in acquisition management and to determine how these relate to management perceptions of the role of IS/IT in the post combined business entity. The different strategies followed by MIS managers when facing with different corporate acquisition strategies will be discussed. This research is an extension of the research done by J.S. Phelps (1996). Furthermore, a specific system integration will be analyzed and examined for the business acquisition in a case study. This dissertation puts forth a plan for research into management information systems in the context of corporate acquisitions. This dissertation will discuss the different MIS acquisition strategies followed by MIS managers of acquiring firms when a corporate acquisition occurs. Also, possible combinations of integration strategies, acquisition types and acquisition goals are analysed and correspond with the appropriate fit MIS acquisition strategies. In particular, a survey is conducted to prove the absorption type of acquisition should have a corresponding replacement type of IS acquisition strategy.en_US
