| dcterms.abstract | This study evaluated the effectiveness of community occupational therapy (COT) for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Twenty-four subjects including 17 male and 7 female with mean age 69, were recruited using purposive sampling. The subjects were allocated to an experimental and a waiting-list control group. Subjects were assessed before and after the COT treatment program. Standardized assessment instruments, including the Moser's classification of ADL, Occupational Therapy Generic Outcome Measure for pulmonary rehabilitation, and measure of dyspnoea and effort (Borg Scale), were used to measure treatment outcomes. The COT program lasted for 4 weeks, in which two home visits and two telephone follow-up were conducted. During home visits, education and training of coordinated breathing techniques, energy conservation techniques and some relaxation techniques were provided. The two telephone follow-up were conducted between the two home visits to reinforce patient's motivation to apply the techniques taught during home visits. Patient's compliance of the home program was also assessed in the second home visit. Results showed that the experimental group demonstrated a higher satisfaction of life, had positive change of quality of life, and overall satisfaction, when compared with the control group. Patients adhered closely to the therapy guidelines of the home program and were very satisfied with the care provided by the community occupational therapist. All patients maintained their functional level throughout the period. The results demonstrated the efficacy of the program in promoting client life satisfaction and quality of life. The implications for clinical practice and future research were discussed in the study. | en_US |
