dc.title | Maximum sea states under typhoon conditions offshore of Hong Kong | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Water waves are basically generated by wind. The situation will become critical if the waves are caused by typhoons. In this study, a simple method to predict the wave condition based on the historical typhoon data is developed. Different typhoon parameters are first collected from the Royal Observatory Hong Kong. By fitting the parameters of typhoon to statistical distributions, a synthetic typhoon can be simulated by Monte Carlo method. By generating a large number of typhoons, the maximum wind encountered each year can be simulated to form a set of extreme wind data after taking into account the number of typhoon occurrence in each year. The maximum sea states due to the extreme wind can then be evaluated by using the simple Ross wind-wave method. Return periods for the sets of extreme wind and waves can then be obtained by Fisher-Tippett Type I distribution. The extreme wind result is compared with the results from the works by Port Work Division. As no field data for the waves is available, the extreme wave from Ross model is compared with different methods. It is worth to mention that in order to eliminate the topographic effect, the point of consideration is shifted to 50 km south of Hong Kong. | en_US |
