| Abstract: | The rise in customer's expectation for quality products has resulted in an increased management concern about product quality and quality management. The purpose of this study will be to identity: 1.the responsibilities of silk fabric suppliers and silk garment manufacturers in ensuring good quality products were delivered to customers; 2.the criteria necessary for proper implementation of purchasing by specifications and pre-production evaluation; 3.the barriers that firms encounter when they implement purchasing by specifications and pre-production evaluation; 4.the effectiveness of the two approaches in quality improvement through cooperation between the silk textile and apparel sectors. This project consists of a field study of a silk apparel manufacturing firm operating in Hong Kong. Data will be collected using two different methods: mailed questionnaire survey and a case study. Discussion would be based on the results of the data analysis of the mailed survey questionnaire, findings of personal observations and on-site interviews. In conclusion, both the survey and case study findings supported that purchasing by specifications and pre-production evaluation would enhance communication between the textile and apparel sectors, together with an effective inspection and testing system, improvement can be achieved in areas such as fabric weight, colourfastness and shrinkage with the exception found in shade variation and visible defects which is due to technological limitations. The project has revealed the silk greige quality being one of the most critical problems and further research is recommended to be undertaken to examine the impact of synergy between the silk sericulture and the textile industry. |
