Practical product quality metrics for intranet applicationsen_US
As the number of Intranet application increases, people face a new software paradigm and possibly a new set of quality requirement. This research is aimed to identify practical software metric for Intranet applications, so as to provide means to improve their software quality. The six software quality characteristics and thirty-two quality sub-characteristics of the Extended ISO model are used as basis to identify the key quality characteristics of Intranet application. From the result of a user survey of 30 Internet/Intranet application users, three key characteristics are identified and they are reliability, functionality and efficiency. Meanwhile, five sub-characteristics, namely, availability, accuracy, security, suitability and time behaviour, are found to be the key attributes of Intranet application. Hence, a set of product quality metrics is developed based on these attributes. Fifteen metrics are developed and three of them are selected by metric users, software developers and management. In order to verify against their validity and applicability to Intranet project; an experiment is performed and the three metrics are applied to five operational Intranet applications. The result is compared with the outcome of user satisfaction survey. The metric values and the survey result are closely related. Better score in software metric leads to higher user satisfaction. As Dr. Edward Deming defines software quality as "user satisfaction" [44], therefore, the selected software metrics can effectively reflect the quality of an Intranet application.en_US
