Abstract: This study presents the findings of an investigation into the technical feasibility of maintaining room temperatures at 25.5oC in local commercial buildings. The study analyzed the cooling loads and electricity consumptions obtained from simulation and the temperatures and humidity levels from site measurements which were performed in a local commercial building. The findings indicate that setting room temperatures at 25.5oC affects thermal comfort adversely because of the corresponding high relative humidity levels. The simulation results show that raising room temperatures is an effective way to save a substantial amount of electricity. It was found that raising room temperatures to 24oC in commercial buildings can achieve both thermal comfort and energy saving. Installing humidity control measures together with air-conditioning systems is an effective way to achieve thermal comfort and energy saving when the room temperature is set at 25.5oC. The occupants in local commercial buildings should adopt the above energy saving measures to reduce electricity consumption and emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases.
