Critical analysis of Internet architectureen_US
The Internet and its profusion of information have presented new challenges for users. People have never before been exposed to information in such a great variety - not only by subject but also in quality. The Internet enables people to work with each other and with resources without regard to time or space. The complexity of the contemporary Internet has deployed many advanced communication and computer technologies. The Internet consists of networking switches, routers, WAN links (range from gigabit backbone links to 28.8K dialup links), hosts and servers, millions of PC clients, and all the infrastructure necessary to maintain the network. Based on this platform, information and resources are distributed and transported in the form some predefined protocols. From the networking point of view, this involves to transport data packets (TCP/IP packet) with optimized routing. In this thesis, we will present a detailed analysis on the technologies that are used today. Firstly, the Queuing Theory will be used to model the networking nodes and the whole Internet. The emphasis will be placed on the impact of the various parameters to the overall throughput and latency. For analyzing the existing networking technologies such as Ethernet, Token ring, FDDI and ATM, JAVA applet tools have been developed to investigate the impact of some parameters (e.g. packet size and bandwidth) on the overall performance interactively. Based on the building components, the architectural design of the Internet will be studied. Besides, the performance characteristics and limitation of the TCP/IP protocol and JAVA technology will be analyzed in detail. Finally, the new networking technologies for multilayer switching and the multimedia applications will be explored. The migration to the future Internet 2 will be covered. The emphasis of the whole thesis is to study and analyze the underlying technologies. In order to make the analysis more easily, JAVA applets has been developed as the simulation tools, so that the readers can view the effect of some parameter to the overall performance interactively. When doing the bottleneck analysis, an experiment has been carried out to see the behavior of traffic congestion. Besides, a lot of graphical representation has been adopted to illustrate the analysis.en_US
