dc.title | Simulation of light dispersion in raytracing | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Ray Tracing algorithm has been widely adopted by many rendering software in the generation of photo-realistic images from digital description of objects. It is proven to be an effective technique due to its capability of handling shadows, reflection and refraction. However, due to the complexity of reality, not all the interactions of light with real-world objects are modeled by Ray Tracing. Dispersion is one of the examples. Dispersion is the spreading of refracted light into its component colours of spectrum because of the differing light speed in dissimilar materials, resulting in different refraction angle for different wavelength of light. It is this effect which gives gemstones or diamonds 'fires'. Most of the current rendering software do not model dispersion in consideration of the complexity and efficiency. In this dissertation, the current studies about implementing dispersion in Ray Tracing are surveyed. It has been found that the existing methods can be mainly divided into two categories : Point Sampling and Area Sampling. Each method has its own merits and shortcomings. A public domain Ray Tracing program (POV) was selected and modified to implement both method. Result images were generated to compare the effectiveness and efficiency on different models of diamonds. | en_US |
