dcterms.abstractThe purpose of this report is to study the possible applications of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) from users' perspective. ATM provides for the high speed transport and switching of fixed size, 53 octet cells of data. It supports Constant Bit Rate (CBR) traffic such as voice and real time video, as well as Variable Bit Rate traffic (VBR) such as compressed video and any type of data communication. The research methods used included survey and interviews. For the interviews, two large multinational companies were interviewed - Compaq and Reuters. Compaq is the second large computer company in the world. They are using ATM to support the data transmission from Hong Kong to Singapore and from Hong Kong to Japan. The speed of these two connections is 2Mega bit per second. They are going to migrate the existing Hong Kong to Beijing IPLC connection to ATM at the beginning of next year. The reasons for using ATM are that they gain cost saving and high speed performance from ATM. In addition, one of their IT focus is IP development. They believed that ATM network infrastructure could enhance their IP development. However, Reuters had a different opinion on ATM. Reuters is the largest information service provider in the world. Their Asia-Pacific network covers more than 20 countries with a total bandwidth of approximately 50Mega bits per second. It is a huge international network. They have adopted International Private Leased Circuits (IPLC) for their data transmission among their sites. According to their comparison between IPLC and ATM, IPLC provide Reuters with better coverage and a more cost-effective network solution. Thus, they will not use ATM as the transport layer in their WAN in the near future. The questionnaire for the survey was divided into three parts. The first part was used to collect the organization background of the respondents. The second part was used to identify perceived benefit of ATM and the potential users of ATM. The last part was to identify the possible application of ATM for the potential users and the reasons for not using ATM for non-potential ATM users. The results of the survey showed that most potential ATM users were from the banking and finance industry. Most of them had large IT budgets at around 5 million per annum. Banking and finance industry places greater emphasis on service reliability and efficiency than other industries. Thus, they are willing to invest more money on their IT network to gain the competitive advantages. Further, most of the respondents recognized that the benefits of ATM were high speeds, low end-to-end delay and low delay variation. And the potential ATM users would use ATM to support high-speed and real-time applications, including IP based service/applications such voice over IP and real-time application like video conferencing. This is because these applications demand high bandwidth and quality of service. Thus, ATM would be their choice. Most non-potential ATM users thought that the operating cost of ATM was expensive. Also, they did not have multimedia application requirement in the near future; therefore, they would not use ATM at this stage.en_US
