Unbounded character representationen_US
This is an information age, yet there are a lot of rooms for improving the information manipulation by computers. One of the important areas is on how to represent human languages in computers. The human languages can be divided into two main groups. One group is alphabetical languages such as English that consists of bounded number of alphabets. The other is non-alphabetical languages such as Chinese that consists of unbounded number of characters. The current character representation schemes are bounded in nature. They have limit on the number of codes and characters that the codes represent. They work seamlessly with the alphabetical languages. The maintenance of the schemes is controlled by standard organisations. These bounded character representations have been adopted to represent non-alphabetical languages. Nevertheless, there are limitations in this adoption. This paper explores the concept of unbounded character representation with a view to facilitating better manipulation of non-alphabetical languages with current information technologies. The unbound character representation is a scheme that do not have the limitations of bounded character representations. It is more than just a coding standard. It should contain standards in storing, manipulating and communicating of character information that include the glyphs and input methods. The unbounded character representation fits seamlessly with the human learning process and should facilitate a real representation of human knowledge in computers. The concept has been confirmed feasible with a prototype.en_US
