dc.title | Using CORBA technology to design a web-based stock quotation system | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The advent of WWW makes it a common place for the electronic information being shared worldwide. At the beginning, WWW acts as a hyper-media system of storing and broadcasting static documents. As time progresses, it is not sufficient to present only static information on the Web. Interactive applications are needed for displaying dynamic data. Providing real-time stock quotation information is an example. A stock quotation system is capable of providing the financial information to the front end when a user makes a request. It is also able to push the most updated piece of information to the front end even if the user doesn't request. Building a stock quotation system on the Web is normally done through two approaches. The first approach is through IPC directly. Developers would spend extra efforts on the network programming. It also has the disadvantage of low flexibility. The second approach is through CGI. CGI is built on top of IPC. Developers are freed from dealing with the low level network programming. But it has the disadvantages of inefficiency and statelessness. This dissertation aims to use the CORBA technology to re-build the prototype of the stock quotation system. Apart from overcoming the concerned problems and difficulties, CORBA has the advantages of flexibility, scalability and high maintainability. These advantages are useful for further development and integration with other systems. This dissertation first points out the problems of using the traditional approaches in building the quotation system. CORBA is introduced and explained why it is chosen. The basic components and working principle of a quotation system are described. Then it comes to the design and implementation of the prototype. Due to insufficient resources and time, it will only discuss how the quotation system works on the Web and how to solve its security issue. No implementation will be done on these areas. It also discusses how to improve the system performance. An evaluation will be done on the system. Finally, it goes to a conclusion and suggests some further work to be done on the prototype. | en_US |
