Applications of GIS for managing the indoor air quality impacts of renovation worken_US
Indoor environmental concerns have been on the rise in recent years. People care more and more about the indoor environment where they are studying, working and living. Demolition and renovation cause great disturbances and generate dust and odour problems which affect the occupants of the building seriously. The facilities management personnel is always trying their utmost to cope with the problem of conducting renovation while other parts of the building are occupied. In the present study, GIS is used to assist the management of renovation works in an occupied institution (the Hong Kong Polytechnic University) with the aim of better controlling the environmental impacts. With the inherent capability of handling spatial information and linking the attribute information to spatial objects, GIS used to be applied to various geographic problems. Its applications become more and more widespread and infiltrate to areas other than geographical but spatial problems. The GIS dataset of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Phase I, IIA and IIIA from 3rd floor to 7th floor were built up. The spatial data consist of room polygons, door lines, centroid points of room polygons, points of renovation sites and network of transportation pathway of pollutants. Spatial data input and data conversion are some of the means used. Relevant attribute information like room capability, renovation status, occupied-hours are collected and entered in the attribute tables. Some of the attribute information cannot be found and are made up for the study. Example includes the dispersion speed of pollutants. Traditional GIS analyses have been carried out under the practical problem setting. Network analysis is used to model the flow of pollutants from renovation sites to adjacent areas making use of distance available in the network attribute. Moreover, surrogate dispersion speeds have been assigned to line segments in the network taking the characteristics of the separation (i.e. the doorways) into consideration. Lastly, effect of pressure difference on the dispersion speed along opposite directions of line segment is also incorporated. Network analyses were done to find closest renovation site of any given room polygon. It is also used to determine the impact area of each renovation site. Spatial query has been used to determine the room polygons lying within the impact zone of the renovation sites. 3D scenes are generated using carefully selected legend field for visual evaluation and analysis. All of them provide useful inputs for better realization of the situation and facilitate the management to make decision to better control the environmental impacts.en_US
