Assessing response of thermal sensitive elements by a wind tunnelen_US
Thermal sensitive elements for fire protection systems including glass bulb sprinkler heads and fusible links were tested in a hot air wind tunnel. Procedure following the plunge method was adopted. Three different temperature ratings of sprinkler heads, 68oC, 79oC, 93oC, and two response types including standard and fast were tested under three different air velocities and temperatures of hot air stream. Locally made fusible link were also tested for determining the characteristics for activation of such thermal sensitive elements. An important parameter, the response time index (RTI) describing how fast these elements would be activated will be determined. RTI is a useful parameter for justifying how fast the fire protection system can be actuated. The response time indices for different temperature ratings of glass bulb sprinkler heads and fusible links were determined. It is recommended that this parameter should be included in the local fire codes in designing fire protection systems in Hong Kong.en_US
