Abstract: | Since the early development of industrial sector of Hong Kong, printing industry has played an important role in advancement of Hong Kong's economy. Through the decades, the nature and the operating modes have gone though many changes. Other than the technological advancement experienced, the progress of development of the supply chain of the industry has changed the how supply chain professionals manage their role dramatically. Sampling from printers with customer base in Europe and the US and manufacturing facilities in Guangdong Province, China, paper merchants and paper mills, this research project is going to examine the role of paper merchants in the supply chain of Hong Kong commercial printers operating in Guangdong Province. It is observed that a common trend in supply management from the 90s onwards, firms have been encouraged to simplify their supply chain, remove layers between the producers to end-user from the system, to become leaner in the process in order to maximize benefits. This research project attempted to analyze the operating environment of the commercial printers and how they and paper merchants interacts within the environment. As we see disintermediation does not seem to be the solution of the issue commercial printer faced. Then the question of whether strategic alliance is beneficial to commercial printers and Vender Managed Inventory service provided a path for paper merchants to re-gain the lost market share in the paper trading market. |
