| dcterms.abstract | In response to the shortage of standardized evaluative outcome measures for children with cerebral palsy and the criticisms on these standardized outcome measures, the purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility of the use of goal attainment scaling (GAS) in the evaluation of gross change of children with cerebral palsy by examining its content validity and reliability. Twenty-four children with cerebral palsy were recruited as subjects and three gross motor goals were established for each subject followed by 4-month intervention. The gross motor goals were written in both GAS format and in the form of behavioral objective. Six experienced paediatric physiotherapists were invited to examine the content validity of GAS and the result of their examination supported the content validity of GAS. Furthermore the inter-rater and intra-rater reliability of GAS were also found to be high. Lastly, the result also indicated that GAS was more responsive than behavioral objective in the monitoring the gross motor change of the subjects. The result suggested that if the validity and reliability of goal attainment scaling is warranted every time when it is being used, it could be a valid and reliable alternate evaluative measure or in conjunct to the standardized outcome measure for children with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, its special features and advantages also make it more superior than behavioral objective in monitoring the progress of the children. | en_US |
